An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique label that is assigned to every device connected to a network. No IP Address = No Connection / Network Access.
Knowing an IP Address allow to access a machine remotely. Even if the device is on another continent or across the world.
Simple Networking skills can be very beneficial for you to have, launching your own Web Servers or for your future/current job.
Versions:
IPv4: Most common; 32-bit format, e.g., 192.168.0.1. About 4.3 billion unique addresses (now exhausted due to demand).
IPv6: Newer; 128-bit format, e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334. Vastly more addresses (~340 undecillion) to solve IPv4 shortage.
Types:
Public IP: Assigned by ISP; visible on the internet; unique globally (This identifies your network)
An example of Public IP address would look like: 34.98.101.5 - This IP address identifies your network & can trace back the location (not exact but an area, usually up to 30-50 miles)
Private IP: Used within local networks (e.g., home Wi-Fi); not routable on the public internet (ranges like 192.168.x.x).
